Explosive Material Found In Giles County Home Print E-mail
by David Grimes

A medical emergency call Sunday night at a Giles County residence has now turned into a police investigation after items to create explosives were found in the basement of the residence.

The Pembroke Police Department, along with the Virginia State Police and the Environmental Protection Agency, are currently conducting an investigation after the materials were found in a College Avenue residence in Pembroke.

According to police, officers and emergency services personnel responded to the residence Sunday evening for a medical emergency. The rescue squad transported Tommy Hamblin to Carilion Giles Memorial Hospital that evening. Hamblin was then transferred to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, were as of Tuesday, he was in a coma. Family members said that Hamblin had been sick and had a high temperature for the past couple of weeks.

Officers said that Hamblin’s father, John Hamblin, gave them permission to search the residence. Officers then located a large quantity of material in the basement of items that could be used to make explosives or explosive devices.

Family members told police that Hamblin, who is in his mid-40s, had a fascination with rockets. Police believe that Hamblin may have been trying to make rocket fuel or some other kind of propellant.

Police said that all of the chemicals found in the basement could be purchased at a hardware store.

For safety reasons, all of the chemicals are being removed from the residence and police said that neighbors are not in any danger.
