Elliston Plant Shutting Down Next Month Print E-mail
David Grimes

Layoffs continue to hit home, as another New River Valley plant, this one in Elliston, will be shutting down in mid-December.

Southland Log Homes, which operates a mill in Elliston, will be shutting down its local operation, forcing the layoff of five employees.

According to the South Carolina-based company, the layoffs are being made in response to demand and they are hoping that the layoffs here will only be temporarily. The company plans to keep all of its equipment  and machinery in Elliston with hopes of reopening when the demand returns.

The U.S. housing market, which started a downward trend in 2006 and worsened last year, is the causing the demand to be less than anticipated. New home sales in October 2008 were 40 percent below what they were this time last year.

The company, which is still selling log homes, will move its milling operations to its Irmo, S.C. plant.
