This morning I attended Mayor Euille's unity breakfast in Alexandria, where I was asked what I was most thankful for: On a personal level, my family. I have been blessed with a supportive husband and 4 great children.
We've got a lot to be thankful for as a Commonwealth, too - best-managed state, best state for business... but my favorite is best state for a child's lifetime success. That's the one that tells me that being the best-managed and the best for business are achieving something for Virginians. I'm thinking about this particularly at Thanksgiving, because the story of Thanksgiving is about coming together and sharing the bounty of the New World. It's about welcoming folks in need and expanding the definition of the family table. It's a reminder to me, and to all of us, that we need our great Virginia schools to do even better for all of Virginia's children. The need to maintain our focus on education is as great now as it has ever been. We face tough economic times - times that are making this a particularly difficult Thanksgiving for many Virginians. The administration in Washington has proposed to move as many as 10,000 Hampton Roads jobs to Florida by home porting an aircraft carrier there. More than ever, Virginia needs schools that prepare our kids to be resilient, resourceful and competitive with their peers not just in Florida, but in China and India, too. Our Virginia education system has grown strong under the leadership of Mark Warner and Tim Kaine. As Lieutenant Governor, I'll never stop fighting to make them stronger for all Virginia kids, from Pre-K on up through our world-class community colleges and four-year universities. To stand up for our students is to stand up for our future. And when it comes to preparing our children for lifetime success, I don't ever plan on letting Virginia slip to number two. Even during difficult times, together we can maintain our focus on the right priorities and keep Virginia moving forward. With many thanks and much determination, Jody Wagner To read more about Jody Wagner, please click here.
