From Ron Walton
What a week last week. Well, the kick off week of 'First Thing in The Morning' was not as good as I had hoped. I was most certainly rusty and not disciplined enough in my show prep. But, as the week progressed, things started settling down and I started settling in.

One thing I had forgotten though - those that like the show will call or email with their ideas and opinions while the ones who don't like the show - in this case, the conservative Republicans - get angry and try to have the show cancelled. Why would they not debate straight-up? I'm right there with open phone lines . . . yet, they are afraid to debate the issues with 'the truth.' Republican extremists will never change - their plans and ideas are flawed, and they can't defend them in an open debate. All they know to do is to 'shut us up' and censor any ideas other than their own. They - the Republicans - will never see the White House again until they understand that America is fed up their politics. Mitt Romney was their best shot to beat Obama because he had new ideas, especially economic ones, and they tossed him like a rag doll.

Told you so. I said it on-air Thursday and others have said the same - the minute President-Elect named his team to run the economy in this country, then, the economy would start to rebound. On Friday, he did and it did as the Dow SOARED almost 500 points! Equally securing to the American people is Obama's plan to create 2.5 million jobs by 2011. What actually happens remains to be seen, but the fact remains that Obama is set to affect change to make things happen. Bush spent the last year staying to his course, a course doomed to fail. Bush is dumb enough to believe that he won because he bullied the American people and got things done the way he wanted to, and we Americans lost because he did things his way. Good riddance.

Appalled. This past week there was report after report about layoffs in Southwest Virginia. So, how could you miss the article in the Roanoke Times that stated that the Montgomery County Teachers' Union wanted a raise for its teachers and school employees. How can these educators be so smart, but be SO DUMB. Perhaps all of them should make their way down to one of the economics classes for a little refresher? We have this thing called a 'recession' going on. We see job losses occurring every day. But none of that matters to the teachers - they want us to know they deserve more money. Everybody does, only most realistic people are happy for the job in this current economic climate. I did get MANY messages from educators after talking about this on the Friday morning show, and 99 percent of them expressed embarrassment to be part of a union that makes them look greedy.

Will Bud Foster be the next Head Coach of Clemson? My sense of the matter is 'probably not.' While the Clemson AD and other school officials probably have Foster high on their list, I doubt he is at the top of the alumni list. And even in college football, those with the gold make the rules. Also in the back of their minds, they see the quick turnaround that Nick Saban has made at Alabama so they'll look for some young, hotshot coordinator or a proven head coach. Foster is more than qualified for the job, but the Clemson alumni will want more than 'qualified.'

Does anyone doubt that the Hokies won't make it to the ACC Championship game? They'll be there and will play well. That's because Beamer will simply demand that Stinespring get back to Hokie football, line up in the 'I' formation and pound the ball behind those big offensive lineman. Let's face it; instead of continuing to look for the next Michael Vick, Beamer should be looking for the next offensive coordinator who can devise an offense that fits the talent he has. Watch what happens to West Virginia next year and beyond as they try to find the next Pat White. Michael Vick and Pat White are once in a lifetime athletes. And Tryod Taylor is not the next Michael Vick.

Layoffs. The area was particularly rocked with people being put out of work this past week. Under the guise of 'there is never a good time to lay off employees,' these were done right before Thanksgiving. I'm sure there will be more just before Christmas. And corporations wonder why people form Unions. I will be the first to agree with many when they say the Unions have hurt the country and the American public, but without the Unions, many workers would not have the money to put food on the table at Thanksgiving and gifts under the tree at Christmas. If the American worker has to suck it up and be put out of work during the holidays, then the precious stockholders of these companies should feel the heat as well. Going forward, don't buy stocks in these companies who lack morals and destroy families. Let the Republicans do that - they have no conscience and certainly no compassion.

Thoughts (and Opinions)

I'm glad that many educators expressed displeasure at the thought of the 'Union' asking for pay increases. In Montgomery County, the 3% increase is just one part. They even asked for an exhorbitant amount for those with a Master's degree, about 100% over the current stipend. That's ANY Master's degree, not just a teaching-related one. If all else fails, I would assure you that those 'chosen few' WILL get their big increase. By the way, in VA, public employees are not allowed to be a 'real' union. About 70% of teachers are members, mostly out of 'fear factors'..they 'join' to acquire a rather poor insurance policy that is supposed to protect against unfair treatment, etc. Local 'unions' take the almost $500 annual cost, pay the NEA (National Education Association) some of it, the VEA (Virginia Education Association) some, and virtually squander the rest. For instance, 'Officers' get their dues paid. I wonder if this is claimed as income? It is a form of income. The 'Uniserve' Director, based in Radford, representing several counties, makes almost $100k, including a 'company' car. It is simply a company that profits from fear.

All aside, the teachers' group and many other minute' issues are only figurines within the shadow of the 'big picture.' As you wrote, the lack of morals and conscience seem to dominate corporate America and certain individuals.

I'm anxiously awaiting stockholders of certain companies to 'put the heat' on their leadership. I may wait forever to see that any dividends, as a group-effort and postive public relations act, are given back to consumers. American Electric Power is the most greedy corporation of all, taking milk from babies.

PS: 1. Bud Foster will take a contract that insures that he will become the VT head-coach, someday.
2. The stockmarket (DOW..most closely monitored), will go as low as 6500, within a few weeks. I hope not, but statistics lean that way.
