Several people will be spending some time in jail after sentences were handed down in Giles County Circuit Court from welfare fraud to drug-related charges.
Tabitha Cotterill of Narrows pled guilty to an amended charge of misdemeanor welfare fraud and was sentenced to 12 months in jail, with three months suspended. She was also placed on supervised probation for eight years and must make restitution in the amount of $1278.00. She also pled guilty to distribution and was sentenced to five years in prison, with 4 years and 3 months suspended. She was also placed on eight years of supervised probation, pay restitution in the amount of $120 and pay court costs in the amount of $3274.50. She also pled guilty to another charge of distribution and was sentenced to 15 years in prison, with 14 years and 3 months suspended. She was also placed on another eight years of supervised probation and must pay restitution in the amount of $120. A third charge of distribution was not prosecuted. The sentences will run concurrent. Christopher Shane Davis of Narrows pled guilty to distribution and was sentenced to 20 years in prison, with 16 years suspended. He must pay restitution in the amount of $500 and court costs in the amount of $3584.36 and placed on 10 years of supervised probation. He also pled guilty to distribution at a community center and was sentenced to five years in prison, with 1 year suspended. Pay restitution of $500 and placed on supervised probation for another 10 years. He also pled guilty to another charge of distribution and was sentenced to 20 years in prison with 16 years suspended. He was placed on 10 years of supervised probation and must pay $500 in restitution. All of the sentences will run concurrent. Samuel Douglas Swing of Christiansburg pled guilty to failure to obey a highway sign after appealing his case from traffic court. He was fined $30 and must pay court costs of $131.00. Neil Franklin Thompson of Narrows pled guilty to grand larceny and was sentenced to 10 years in prison, all suspended. He was placed on five years of supervised probation and pay court costs of $745. He also pled guilty to entering a building to commit a crime and was sentenced to 10 years in prison, all suspended, and placed on five years of probation. Both sentences will run concurrent. Jason Curtis Hudson of Pearisburg pled guilty to possession of marijuana. He was fine $100, pay court costs of $432.50, had his driver’s license suspended for six months and placed on six months of supervised probation.
