Numerous Accidents, One Involving A State Trooper, Keep Police Busy Print E-mail
David Grimes

A multi-vehicle accident late Monday night on I-81 near the Christiansburg interchange sent four people to the hospital, including a Virginia State Trooper. In addition, numerous accidents this morning kept troopers busy in Pulaski and Wythe counties.

According to the Virginia State Police, a series of minor accidents, all occurring within minutes of each other, started at 11:35 p.m. on the southbound side of I-81at mile marker 118, near the Route 460 interchange in Christiansburg Monday night.

The fist accident occurred when a Chevrolet pick-up truck collided with a tractor-trailer after sliding on ice.

As Virginia State Trooper Mark Collins was investigating the initial accident, the driver of the first accident and the trooper where sitting in the officer’s vehicle, which was parked in the far left emergency shoulder, when a van driving across the interstate bridge lost control.

The van, which was towing another van, then struck the trooper’s vehicle, sparking a chain reaction of several minor accidents. This particular crash happened at 12:08 a.m.

Four people were transported by ambulance to Carilion New River Valley Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries. Trooper Collins was taken to the hospital by his supervisor as a precautionary measure. All of the victims were treated and later released from the hospital.

The Christiansburg Police Department, Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office and VDOT assisted at the scene.

All lanes of I-81 were re-opened to traffic by 2:35 a.m.

In addition to the early morning accident in Montgomery County, several accidents occurred around 7:15 a.m. this morning along both of northbound and southbound lanes of I-81 at the Pulaski/Wythe County line due to the weather conditions.

According to Sgt. Michael Conroy of the Virginia State Police, there were some reported injuries, none life-threatening.

All lanes of I-81 are now open in Pulaski and Wythe County.
