A group of area non-profit organizations have teamed up with the Virginia Tech German Club Alumni Foundation (GCAF) to announce the “Leading Lights: Neighbors Honoring Neighbors” recognition awards for volunteers in our community. Leading Lights seeks to recognize volunteers in the NRV from all sectors who are making community-changing impacts and serving as a model to inspire others. The group will honor award-winners by donating $1,000 to the non-profit of their choice.
The GCAF proposed the idea to local organizations and formed Leading Lights with representatives from local non-profits such as the Community Foundation of the NRV, the German Club, Montgomery County Public Schools, United Way of Montgomery, Radford & Floyd, VT Engage, Virginia Tech YMCA, and Virginia Tech University. “The three pillars of the German Club are Leadership, Service, and Fellowship. From this culture and seeing the outstanding response of volunteers to the events of April 16, 2007, the GCAF Board of Directors proposed an annual celebration of volunteerism in our community. The purpose is two-fold: to recognize our neighbors who have volunteered and inspired others to volunteer; and to help continue the culture of volunteerism among our neighbors,” states Wayne Campbell, President of the GCAF. “The Leading Lights awards will recognize NRV volunteer leaders who greatly impact the lives of others.” Five awards will be given in three categories: three community, one youth, and one collegiate. Nominees must be current residents of or currently enrolled in schools in the New River Valley. The award selection committee will include representation from across the New River Valley. Award winners will be selected based on the following criteria: Ø Strong community involvement Ø Demonstrates lifestyle of dedicated, continuous, long-term involvement to the community Ø Proven leadership Ø Creativity in initiating and implementing projects that lead to a better quality of life Organizations and individuals are encouraged to submit nominations.
