SportsTalk 101.7 FM: NRV's Only FM Sports Talk Station Print E-mail
David Grimes

They bill themselves as the only FM sports station in the New River Valley and they have the programming to back it, with heavy hitters like local sports guru Rick Watson and his Big Dog Sports Talk Show, the Jim Rome Show and the Dan Patrick Show, as well as a buffet of local high school sports.

So just how did SuperSports 101.7 come about to provide the best sports coverage in the New River Valley? “Super Sports 101.7 FM evolved from its previous format SuperTalk 101.7 FM,” said Scott Stevens, Operations Manager of the Cumulus owned stations.

“We already had a sports show on in Rick Watson’s ‘Big Dog Sports Talk’, which is without a doubt the most popular show on the radio station,” said Steven. “We had all of these great sports products on our AM station, WRAD, and we felt we weren’t reaching the audience with that AM station.”

Stevens had nothing but high praise for Watson and the job he had done.

“He [Watson] is very passionate about sports,” said Stevens. “it’s his livlyhood.”

According to Stevens, WRAD featured shows like Dan Patrick, Jim Rone and Fox Sports Radio, so it was a business decision to move those products over to the FM and rename it SuperSports 101.7.

In addition to the popular talk shows, area sports junkies can hear Monday Night Football, Sunday Night Football, Thursday Night Football, college football games and local high school games on the station.

When they the first made the switch in the station’s format several months from news talk to all sports, lots of listeners weren’t very happy.

“We acknowledge and understand that there are people that are upset because some of the talk shows we use to carry on SuperTalk 101.7 are no longer on the air,” added Stevens.

The Dave Ramsey Show was moved over to our AM talk station, 710 WFNR.

Stevens said. “Our commitment 710 AM our other all talk radio station is also there. We have shows like Dave Ramsey, Rush Limbaugh and starting this Monday morning we will be adding a show called ‘First Thing in the Morning Show with Ron Walton.”

“Overall, the move has been received extremely well by the sports fans and listeners in the New River Valley,” Stevens noted.

As for the plans for the station’s future, Stevens replied, “I think we’re going to stay the course. The commitment is real to keep this format on and to make it successful.”

Some of the future ideas for the two all talk stations include streaming the local shows like Big Dog and First Thing in the Morning on our websites.

If you want to know anything about sports in the New River Valley than SportsTalk 101.7 is the place to go to, according to Stevens.

Is Ron Walton drunk on air ?
written by Matt, January 05, 2009
Holy Christ what a bad show!

Pooch is on all the time and I feel like my IQ drops 10 points while listening to Ron and Pooch banter.

I will give him a try however, I can understand being out of practice after a 6 year hiatus.

The station has really gone down hill, lots of technical issues too.

Ms. Skinner.......4 more years of George Bush policies and we would have been a 3rd world country with more and more people sinking below the poverty level, being thrown out in the streets by bankers and children going to bed hungry at night. How can you or any other Republican call yourselves "compassionate"? Why are you and others trying to censor someone just because they don't share your viewpoints?

Ms. Skinner is, apparently, a name-caller, of 'narrow' 'proportion' (no PHAT Thanksgiving for her!)..The M-word: look in the mirror; feel the love.
I appreciate Mr. Walton's broad, factual perspectives, even IF personal interpretatons are included, whether all agree or not. That's the USA! The presentations are well-informed, open-minded, open-ended viewpoints, whereas, one may call-in and comment and/or 'challenge.' Refreshing; good for the community.

I have just recently started coming to this website as I heard it promoted on WFNR. It is a good site, filled with real news and real information, not like the "hate filled" and racist other local site. Reading Ms. Skinner's post she simply provides everyone with the realistic knowledge of what is wrong with the Republican party - we need to change to present change and change is what the country wanted. I also understand that Mr. Walton is affiliated with this site and still Ms. Skinner's comments are there for all to see. I assume he could rip them down. I don't know the guy, he sounds like a jerk on the air sometimes, but I do feel like Ms. Skinner is not affording him the same opportunity to present a different side of things. I agree.......move. Perhaps you would do well in a country where everyone agrees with you and you shoot the ones who don't.

Typical Republican. If someone disagrees with her, then that person is a moron. I agree, get with the program or move to another country. Nobody knows for certain that Obama can fix our problems with the economy, but we do know for sure that Bush can't. Why should we expect different results from the same plan from the same people. I was a Republican.....I voted for Obama. Shame on people who can not debate issues with some degree of civility. Change the channel.

Obviously Ms Skinner hasn't read that we are in a recession. Perhaps her life is so great with a great job that she doesn't see the problematic lives many of us are leading - all because of George Bush and this Iraq war. That's all the "historical perspective" that Mr. Walton needs. Get with the program or move to another country - we won, you lost. Obama is the only chance we have to bring this country together - Bill Bennett was simply another guy still stuck in a time warp of the Republicans have better ideas. Ridiculous.

I practically exploded listening to Ron Walton on First Thing in the Morning and his moronic attempts at economics. PLEASE bring back the intelligent and calm Bill Bennett! Walton lacks historical perspective and any sense of proportion. Listening to him you would think we're a third world nation and like a third world nation we should rise up and dismiss Bush and crown Obama king.

...don't get me wrong, I love sports news but 24/7 sports news is overkill for me. I miss old talk radio shows from befor and if you work at night (like I do) there isn't anything news releated programing to listen to after 8 pm.
I guess I'll make the switch to XM radio in the near future

Scott Stevens adds a good, realistic perspective to his information. In particular, I have, for years, enjoyed his broadcasts from the on-site venues, such as at VA Tech, at their tailgate show. Stevens' jovial approach adds some laughs, and reminds one that sports should be fun.
