Two Train Incidents Being Investigated In Montgomery County Print E-mail
David Grimes

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office and Norfolk Southern Police are currently investigating two separate incidents involving trains in the county in as many days.

The latest incident occurred around 7:35 a.m. Wednesday morning in the Elliston area.

According to Lt. Brian Wright of the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, a train struck a 2002 Chevrolet at the crossing off North Fork Road, near the old Virginia Department of Transportation shop.

The preliminary report indicated that the female driver lost control of her vehicle and it got stuck on the tracks. She had left the car to go get help and while she was gone, the train struck her car.

The vehicle was removed from the train by an area wrecker service and the train continued on.

No one was injured and the sheriff’s office is continuing its investigation, according to Lt. Wright.

Norfolk Southern officials are also investigating a train derailment that took place around 1 a.m. Tuesday morning in the Pepper area, just outside of Radford.

According to Norfolk Southern, 12 cars of a 100-car coal train derailed. The train route was closed for more than 15 hours, as crews cleared the mess.

There were no injuries reported.

An investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the derailment.
