A Giles County man has thrown his name in the hat to be considered as a challenger for the Virginia Republican Party’s nomination for lieutenant governor in 2009.
Republican Patrick Muldoon of Pearisburg, who lost in the 1996 Ninth District congressional race to Rep. Rick Boucher, has paid his filing fees to be a candidate for the nomination. Muldoon, a relative newcomer to statewide politics, lost to Boucher by 65 percent of the votes, 122,908 to 58,500. In Giles County, Boucher received 3,940 votes to Muldoon’s 2,142. In the Pearisburg precinct alone, Muldoon only had 658 votes, compared to Boucher’s 999. Current Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling is also seeking the GOP nomination. The Virginia GOP will nominate candidates for statewide office at their convention in Richmond on May 29-30, 2009.
