At least 12 Radford University students are homeless after a fire broke out at a Downey Street apartment complex early Monday evening.
According to Becky Hawke, Radford City spokeswoman, the Radford Fire Department responded to the 1100 block of Downey Street for a reported structure fire at around 6 p.m. When firefighters arrived, they found the bottom front apartment fully engulfed in flames. According to Radford Fire Chief Lee Simpkins, its believed that the fire may have been started by a candle in the front bedroom. There were no reported injuries to any students, although a Radford firefighter did receive a cut on his hand in responding and was treated and released at Carilion New River Valley Medical Center. The basement apartment, were the fire originated, was considered a total loss, while the two upper-level apartments suffered extensive smoke damage. Damages to the 12-unit apartment complex, which is owned by Price-Williams Realty, and its contents was estimated at $105,000. Radford University Residence Life and the American Red Cross are stepping in to help house the displaced students, according to Hawke. Two engines and at least 20 firefighters responded to the scene.
