Harvey's GM Named Main Street Radford's Business Of The Month Print E-mail
By: Becky Haupt

Poised to celebrate fifty years in business is Harvey’s GM, Main Street Radford’s Business of the month November.  Since 1959, Harvey’s GM Inc. has been providing Radford and regional shoppers with a large variety of choices from Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet and Pontiac as well as a wide selection of used vehicles.

It all started on East Main Street, formally known as Norwood Street, in the now vacant lot next to Macado’s, moving to its current location at 1500 Tyler Avenue in 1973.  George Harvey Sr. started the family business and though he has officially retired at 80 to enjoy golfing, hunting and time with his family, he still maintains an office at the dealership. The day to day operations are now run by partners and brothers Brad and George Harvey Jr. both of whom grew up washing cars and working through all departments of  their father’s dealership. George became full-time in 1975 and Brad came on in 1983.

As Harvey’s GM has continued to grow and change, something that has not wavered is their dedication to their customers.  Customer service means making your car buying experience as easy and enjoyable as possible and at Harvey’s their professional sales team is committed to a no-pressure, high integrity approach to your ownership experience. Their goal is for you to feel that the vehicle you drive away in is the perfect one for you.  Aside from their excellent sales staff, is their equally as helpful service department staff, which operates out of a state of the art facility along with their parts department, which offers high quality inventory of parts.  Another benefit of Harvey’s GM is their in-house finance department that specializes in providing a variety of financial solutions.  And as of last December with the purchase of the former Turman Yates Dealership, Harvey’s GM has expanded out to Floyd.  After some remodeling and renovations, the new Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep dealership has just had a grand re-opening.

Another thing that hasn’t changed at Harvey’s GM is the company’s involvement
in the Radford and surrounding area.  Following in their father’s altruistic nature both Brad and George Jr. are very community and service oriented. Every year for the past 40 years the dealership has helped provide food for needy families during Christmas time. The dealership matches what the employees give each year and a locally owned grocery store, Wade’s, also helps as a large contributor each year. Harvey’s employees then hand deliver the baskets.  The dealership philosophy, that if you take care of your employees they will take care of your customers, apparently works as is testimony to the longevity of the business.  Harvey’s GM is also heavily involved in support of Virginia Tech, Radford University, the local high schools and playgrounds.  Sound too good to be true?? They are. To check out great customer service or schedule a test drive, stop by their showroom at 1500 Tyler Avenue to experience all that they have to offer. Or reach them at 639- 3923 or contact them via their website at www.harveysgm.com.

Established by Main Street Radford in August 2004 as a way to recognize Main Street business owners for their accomplishments and to also promote economic development in the City, Main Street Radford uses this program as a way of honoring our local businesses. The Main Street Radford board of directors uses the following criteria to nominate and vote on a business of a month.

In addition to being a current member of Main Street Radford, the following criteria are used to determine eligible Business of the Month Candidates:

Radford business that has recently opened or are under new ownership or management
1 Radford business member that have moved to a new or second location
2 Radford business member that have completed recent property renovation
3 Radford business member that offer new or expanded services/products
4 Radford business member that is celebrating anniversary or milestones
5 Business members that have demonstrated significant growth or outstanding customer service

Becky Haupt, Main Street Radford’s Director, believes that “the business of the month” program serves as another form of advertising for our Main Street merchants.

We wouldn’t have such a unique and vibrant downtown if not for them. Haupt strongly encourages Radford citizens to come out and support all Radford businesses. For more information about the “Business of the Month” program, contact the MSR office at 731-3656.
