An outbreak of norovirus has sent about 40 people, mostly Virginia Tech students, to the campus’s health center and to Montgomery Regional Hospital in the past two days.
Victims of the illness started showing up at Montgomery Regional Hospital and the Schiffert Health Center on the Virginia Tech campus mid-week. According to Robert Parker of the Virginia Department of Health, “the virus is a contagious bug that can be picked up from other people or even from a shared surface.” Symptoms of norovirus include nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Parker went on to say that it takes about two days to clear your body, as there are no antibiotics for it. “Hygiene (hand-washing) is the best preventive measure, while hydration (drinking water) is the most important part of dealing with the sickness,” stated Parker. Parker noted that the health department was notified of the outbreak by officials from Montgomery Regional Hospital after the students started showing up there. “As of right now, no one has been hospitalized overnight,” added Parker.
