The Montgomery County Christmas store has once again benefited from the generosity of the Hokie Nation, as the Marching Virginians held its annual 'Hokies for the Hungry' canned food drive Thursday night prior to the Virginia Tech/Maryland football game.
Each person attending the game was asked to donate a canned-food item to help the food shelf at the Montgomery Christmas Store. “This is just our way of helping those less fortunate," said Allan Webster of Harrisonburg, as he dropped a bag full of canned items into a drop-off box prior to entering the game. “We have been donating every year for the past 10 years, why stop now.” The Marching Virginians have sponsored this event at every Thursday night home football game for the past 12 years. The Marching Virginians broke down into smaller groups and roamed the parking lots, playing music to the tailgaters, while collecting food and money.“This is a worthy organization and they have helped a lot of people here in Montgomery County,” said Vicki Caston of Christiansburg. A pickup truck parked in front of one of the entrances in to Lane Stadium was full of canned food items, and bags of items were left at all of the entrances into the stadium. One of the Marching Virginians said that the fans were very generous in donating food and money. The Montgomery County Christmas Store has been in operation since 1982 and they served more than 1,316 families last year. The MCCS is open for five days a year, and is still looking for volunteers; those interested can help by visiting its Web site at www.mcchristmasstore.org for more information or calling (540) 381-0585.
