With the majority of the precincts reporting in across the New River Valley, Republican candidates John McCain/Sarah Palin led the way in Giles, Floyd, and Pulaski Counties, while the Democratic ticket of Barack Obama/Joe Biden was winning in Montgomery County and the City of Radford. Democrat Mark Warner has been elected the new U.S. Senator for Virginia, while Democrat Rick Boucher will be returning to Congress representing the Ninth District.

Giles County

In Giles County, with nine of the 10 precincts reporting, McCain had 4,217 votes compared to 2,979 for Obama.

As for the U.S. Senate race, Democrat Marker Warner had 4,802 votes to Republican Jim Gilmore’s 2,220

Rick Boucher, who was running unopposed for the 9th District Congress seat, had 5,691 votes to 79 write-in votes.

Floyd County

With five of six precincts reporting, McCain has tallied 4,019 votes to Obama’s 2,541.

Warner had 4,080 votes compared to 2,410 for Gilmore in the Senate race.

Boucher had 5,320 votes compared to 118 for a write-in candidate.

Pulaski County

McCain was leading Obama 7,994 to 5, 324 with 12 of 13 precincts reporting.

Warner had 8,514 votes to Gilmore’s 4,533 votes.

Boucher posted 11.152 votes to just 262 write-ins.

Voters in the Robinson District and the Massie District also voted for Mixed Beverage, In the Robinson District 722 voted yes and 381 said no, while the Massie District saw 851 voters say yes and 407 said no.

Montgomery County

The Obama ticket led the way in Montgomery County with 22 of 23 precincts reporting.

Obama garnered 19,139 votes to McCain’s 17,822.

Warner was leading Gilmore 25,352 to 11,012.

Boucher tallied 30,807 votes to 922 write-ins

In the race for District A School Board seat, Phyllis T. Albritton, the incumbent, had 3,751 votes compared to 1,366 for B. Amy Davey Mauldon. Three of the four District A precincts had reported in.

Radford City

With all four of its precincts reporting in, Obama tallied 2,930 votes to 2,418 for McCain.

Warner received 3,851 votes to Gilmore’s 1,458.

Boucher picked up 4,573 votes, while write-ins got 123 votes.

Statewide

Statewide, Democrat Mark Warner had 1,850,910 (63 percent) to Gilmore’s 1,029,407 (35 percent) with 90 percent of the state’s precincts reporting.

Shortly after 9 p.m. Tuesday night, Gilmore conceded to Warner.

Also statewide, Obama/Biden was declared the Presidential winners. This marked the first time since 1964, when LBJ was elected, that Virginian's have elected a Democrat as President.
