Election Day Guide For The New River Valley Print E-mail
David Grimes

Election Day 2008 is less than 24 hours away and EverythingNRV.com has provided a comprehensive list to help you vote here in the New River Valley.  While all the ballots will show races for the Presidential Candidates, the U. S. Senate race and the U.S. Ninth District House race, two precincts in Pulaski County will have a local issue concerning Mixed Alcoholic Beverages on their ballot, while one area of Montgomery County will be voting for a new school board member.

Polls will open at 6 a.m. and close at 7 p.m. All of the registrars in the NRV have in place a method to make sure that anyone in line at 7 p.m. will have their vote counted. If you arrive after 7 p.m., you will not be allowed to vote.

Presidential candidates include Democrat: Barack Obama and Joe Biden; Republican: John McCain and Sarah Palin; Independent Green Party: Chuck Baldwin and Darrell L. Castle; Libertarian: Bob Barr and Wayne A. Root; Green Party: Cynthia McKinney and Rosa Clementa; and Independent Party, Ralph Nader and Matt Gonzalez.

The United States Senate race includes Democrat: Mark Warner; Republican: Jim Gilmore; Independent Green: Glenda Gail Parker and Libertarian: William B. Redpath.

The U.S. Ninth District House race is uncontested, with Democrat Rick Boucher on the ballot.

You Will Need Identification

In order to vote, you will need to bring the following with you on Tuesday.

First-time voters will need will need a valid photo identification card, or a current utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck or another government document that shows the voter’s name and address.

All other voters must have either a Virginia voter registration card, valid Virginia’s driver’s license, military ID, any federal, state, local or employer-issued photo ID, or a social security card.

If you have no ID with you, you will still be able to vote, after signing under oath an affirmation of identification.

What If You Are Not On The Voting Rolls

If your voter eligibility is challenged, you may be allowed to cast a provisional paper ballot, which will not be counted on Election Day. The day after the election, local electoral boards will research the ballot and decide on a case-by-case basis whether to count your vote or not. You may also be asked to cast a provisional ballot if the normal voting hours are extended by a court order.

Banned Items At Polling Precincts

Virginia law bans clothing, hats, buttons or other campaign paraphernalia that expressly advocates the election or defeat of a candidate or issue within 40 feet of any entrance to a polling place. The Virginia State Board of Elections banned these items in October from polling place.

Also, cell phones and PDAs must be turned off if you are inside the polling precinct.

Registrars throughout the NRV will be enforcing this state law, which is a Class 1 misdemeanor. You will be allowed to vote, even if you fail to remove or cover the item, however, your name and address will be turned over to the Commonwealth Attorney for possible prosecution.
