A Blacksburg High School student escaped serious injury after her vehicle struck a large pine tree and then coming to rest near a house on Patrick Henry Drive Monday afternoon.
According to Sgt. Nathan O’Dell of the Blacksburg Police Department, the accident occurred at approximately 2 p.m., as the driver was exiting the parking lot of Blacksburg High School onto Patrick Henry Drive. The investigation showed that the female student, who was operating a 2004 Dodge Stratus, was approaching the intersection from the school’s parking lot, when she reached into the back seat for her backpack. She then stepped on the accelerator, thinking she was applying the brake. The vehicle accelerated across Patrick Henry Drive and off the paved road striking a large pine tree. The vehicle continued traveling through a backyard of a residence, with the pine tree on top of the vehicle, before coming to a stop approximately twenty feet from the house. Blacksburg Fire Department had to use a chain saw to remove the tree from atop the vehicle in order for the vehicle to be removed from the yard. According to Sgt. O’Dell, the driver was not injured in the accident and no charges were placed against her as a result of the crash. Damage to the vehicle was estimated at $4,500.00 and to the pine tree at $500.00.
