William Jefferson Clinton, former President of the United States of America, stumped for the Democratic political ticket while in Roanoke.
Several thousands attended the Market Square rally, on the sunny Sunday afternoon. After reminding Virginians to get the vote out for Mark Warner and other Democratic candidates, Clinton made a pointed attack about the plight of Americans. Clinton said that he and some of his friends were talking recently, and that they decided that we were "to the point of screaming; that's how upset we are about what's going on in America, right now. We agreed that we had all had a good life, but that it was the young folks that we need to help have the same chances as prior generations. Two million more Americans have slipped into poverty, and we must stop the trend." "When America is in the 'ditch,' that's when American's overwhelmingly vote Democratic. It has most often worked," Clinton continued. “Winston Churchill was quoted as once saying that, regarding America's WWII inaction, 'Americans wait until the very last second to make their decision.' Well, after Pearl Harbor, we entered the war, and helped Britain. Health care woes, Wall St. 'short-seller' practices, and other economic and social concerns were mentioned as essential points of concern.” “Barack Obama has the right ideas, and plans that will work. Plans to make buildings more efficient, help remove CO2 emissions from coal, and wind-power are being embraced. We need to modernize our electrical grids. Such efforts will bring jobs, and that is the source for prosperity. We must elect Barack Obama," Clinton said. Former President Clinton lingered for about thirty-minutes, greeting the friendly crowd, one by one.
