The Christiansburg Police Dept. is launching a safety tracking service for the community, with the help of the Christiansburg-Blacksburg Rotary Club, called Project Lifesaver. This program uses technology to quickly find people who may become lost due to Alzheimer’s disease and disabilities like autism. Project Lifesaver offers an exceptionally high probability of finding a missing person wearing a radio transmitter embedded in a bracelet that emits a signal over a range of one mile on the ground, and five to seven miles by air.
At the September 29th Rotary meeting, Club President Ike Eller presented a check to Chief Mark Sisson and Sgt. Kevin Tucker of the Police Dept., commenting that, “Project Lifesaver is the type of program Rotary likes to support, because of its impact in the community, and because of the way it addresses the Rotary motto, ‘Service above self.’ ” Terry Nicholson, Club representative in the partnership, indicated Rotary’s support will cover 50% of the cost to launch the program. The Police Dept. representatives expressed their appreciation for Rotary’s support, and explained how these funds would be used to train over a dozen officers or volunteers, and to purchase the equipment and support materials needed to give the program a good start. It is anticipated the Project Lifesaver service will be available in the Christiansburg community as early as October, 2008. For Further Information Contact: Sgt. Kevin Tucker at:
