Virginia Tech wide receiver Ike Whitaker, who was suspended indefinitely from the football team last Thursday for violations of team policy, was arrested later that night outside a Blacksburg bar for public intoxication.
According to Sgt. Nathan O’Dell of the Blacksburg Police Department, bike officer Sedrick Hayes observed two men in a verbal altercation outside of the Oge Chi’s dance club in the 200 block of Draper Street shortly after 11 p.m. last Thursday night, Oct. 2. The police report indicated that friends of Whitaker tried pulling him away from the other person during the altercation, but Whitaker broke away from them and started arguing again with the other suspect. At that time officer Hayes intervened. During the preliminary investigation, officer Hayes noticed a strong odor of alcohol coming from Whitaker, along with slurred speech and glassy red eyes. Whitaker was given a field breath test and he blew a .33. Whitaker was released on his own recognizance and is scheduled to appear in Blacksburg General District Court at 8:30 a.m. on Nov. 6. Earlier that day, Virginia Tech head football coach Frank Beamer announced that Whitaker had been suspended indefinitely from the football team due to violations of team rules. Although Beamer would not specify as to why Whitaker was suspended, sources said Whitaker was suspended for missing a wide receivers meeting the day before. Whitaker, who is from Germantown, Md., has played in three games this season, catching three passes for 14 yards against East Carolina. Whitaker spent 27 days in voluntary alcohol rehab two years ago.
