As a true blue Democrat, let me sum up what most Democrats are thinking today - House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is an idiot. The almost 70 years old Democrat, who continues to wear tops far too small for her 'busty' build, basically killed the $700 billion Wall Street rescue plan on Monday. The Republicans got this one right - Pelosi's speech prior to the vote was terribly partisan. Pelosi's speech was basically a 'rant' placing blame for the financial problems squarely on the Bush Administration. Perhaps you are like me and differ with the 'bailout,' but Republicans and Democrats alike have to admit that Pelosi laid a goose egg with her speech to the House.
The Rescue Plan. Interesting. Last week it was a 'bail out,' this week it is a 'rescue.' The way the bill is written resembles more of a 'bail out' and this is what I have issues with. The Bush Administration and many in Congress tell us that it is not a perfect plan, but something has to be done to salvage the American economy. Bull. The plan needs to be more of a 'work out' that resembled the loans given to Chrysler many years ago. Provide loans to keep the economy solvent, but make them run their business like a business by forcing these companies to pay back these loans. After all, it was the lenders that put themselves in this position. Polls show that most Americans agree with this - so why is Congress not listening? Politics - they need the political donations from these groups. Both Republicans and Democrats have these large organizations on their balance sheet as donors to their campaigns. As far as who caused the financial problems in this country, it was not just the Republicans and Democrats - it was everyone. Recently, I read a columnist's post on a local website blaming the Democrats. He should get on Pelosi's boat - he's an idiot, as well. This financial 'adjustment' was set in motion many years ago by both parties. I think this country misses one person who 'got it' - Dick Gephardt. On the banking front, Wachovia forgot to live up to their name of 'Watch-Ova-Ya.' Citigroup takes Wachovia for what amounts to $1 per share. Politics. So who was the winner of Friday night debate? Jim Lehrer, the moderator from PBS. Watching and listening to Lehrer gave me hope for the media. His work was CLEARLY 'fair and balanced.' Fox and CNN should take note. His performance might just lead people tiring of Hannity and Blitzer and their one-side views, to give PBS another chance. Who was the loser? The American people. Neither McCain nor Obama answered direct questions with direct answers. Obama's lack of direct answers to some questions showed his arrogance by thinking the American people were not smart enough to see his dodging. McCain didn't do much better, but I didn't see the same arrogance as Obama. Frankly, I'm not sure McCain had any answers for some of the questions. Thursday night is the VP debate - Biden vs. Palin. Biden is clearly way ahead of Palin on understanding many issues, especially foreign policy. But Biden needs to be careful that he doesn't come off as being an arrogant ass. His fault is he knows too much and talks too much. If Biden doesn't understand where his weakness is, Palin could score a victory here. How about The Hokies? After a big win against Nebraska, The Hokies find themselves back in the top 25 coming in at #20 in the AP poll. This week is homecoming and another 'pansy' team coming to Blacksburg. Western Kentucky doesn't bring much to the competition table and my prediction is that Glennon will get a lot of playing time - as soon as Tyrod puts the game out of reach . . . probably somewhere in the middle of the second quarter. Oh, and by the way . . . for Scott Stevens: Please notice that my beloved Crimson Tide is now number two in the country. I can only hope to decorate your office as you did mine several years ago when the Hokies beat Bama. Speaking of Bama . . . many a Crimson Tide fan got a shock Saturday and Sunday following the Bama - Georgia game as many gas outlets in Georgia were out of gas. Many had an unexpected stay-over waiting for fuel. Our Larry Middleton wrote a good article about it on Monday. Check the backlist of stories. Anything on your mind? Agree? Disagree? We're always open at 'your turn.'
