According to Montgomery County Emergency Services Coordinator Neal Turner, there should be little to no worry for the New River Valley this weekend regarding Tropical Storm Hanna.
Despite earlier speculation that Hanna would hit the Virginia's east coast full-force, the tropical storm has faltered from its path. It will now be lending its land blow to the Carolina's. Turner participated in a conference call with the Virginia Department of Emergency Management this morning around 11 a.m. It was then determined that our immediate area would not feel much - if any - effect from Hanna. "Right now, it looks like we may not even get any rain at all," Turner said. "And winds will only be around 10 to 25 miles per hour, in gusts." Though Hanna will be several hundreds of miles away, Virginia's east coast will still feel strong winds and rain from the tropical system. Though the threat of Tropical Storm Hanna is not on our doorstep, Montgomery County Emergency Services advocates always having an emergency kit on hand to include non-parishable food, water, batteries, flashlights, extra clothing and blankets, and a radio.
