On the seventh anniversary of 9-11, the Sure Foundation Christian Fellowship will sponsor the first annual First Responders Appreciation Day at Radford’s Bisset Park on Thursday, Sept. 11.
Members of area law enforcement agencies, fire departments and EMS crews will be honored in a special ceremony at Bisset Park’s Shelter #1 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. A catered meal will be served to all agency representatives in uniform starting at 11 a.m. and an awards ceremony will take place starting at 1:30 p.m. “The whole idea of the First Responders Appreciation Day all came about following a study in our church to honor people,” said Pastor Steve Phillips of the Sure Foundation Christian Fellowship. “Nothing was being done locally to honor our first responders, so we figured this would be a good way to honor these heroes." The agencies to be represented and recognized at next Thursday’s event include, Chief Don Goodman, Radford Department of Police; Radford City Sheriff Mark Armentrout; Captain Larry Brown of the Radford University Police; Radford Fire Department Chief Lee Simpkins; Fairlawn Volunteer Fire Department Chief Randy Miles; Chief Robby Stoots of the Twin Community Volunteer FD; Pulaski County Sheriff Jim Davis; Captain Jason Gifford of the Radford-Carilion EMS; RAMSI EMS Executive Director Joe Trigg, and a representative of the Radford University EMS. “We will be recognizing 10 different agencies and we are expecting about 125 first responders,” added Phillips. Phillips is encouraging the public to come out and show their support for the area first responders. “We hope that public will be here next Thursday, especially when we present the awards at 1:30 p.m.,” noted Phillips. The Sure Foundation Christian Fellowship is a non-denominational Christian Church with local ministries, which include the Fairlawn Christian Academy and Little Lambs Christian Day School.
