Montgomery County Public Schools Significantly Increased its SOL Scores Print E-mail
EverythingNRV
Montgomery County Public Schools significantly increased its Standards of Learning (SOL) scores with all schools and the district overall achieving Full Accreditation for the first time. It is also the first time the district will meet Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) for math and English under No Child Left Behind by either meeting the benchmark or by reducing the failure rate by 10% or more.

Virginia has a dual accountability system that includes state accreditation and federal AYP under No Child Left Behind.  Both are determined by SOL scores. The Virginia Department of Education evaluates schools based on a compilation of scores for all students in English, math, history, and science to determine accreditation status. The federal government uses the scores in English, math, and either science or attendance, broken down into seven subgroups, to determine AYP. The benchmarks under No Child Left Behind increase each year as districts work toward the goal of a 100% pass rate.

In 2007, the benchmark in English was 73% and the benchmark in math was 71%. In 2008, the benchmarks increased to 77% and 75% respectively.  This year every subgroup in the division-wide scores significantly improved in English and Math. Eleven schools in Montgomery County achieved AYP status.

Superintendent Dr. Tiffany Anderson continues to attribute the improved results to the continued hard work and dedication from students, staff, and parents. School division scores for 2007-2008 and 2008-2009 in English and math are as follows:
