Christopher Lawrence, who is currently an assistant to the Blacksburg Town Manager, was named Friday the new town manager for Vinton. Lawrence, who will start his new job on September 29, was the top candidate out of 40 applicants who had applied for the position. The decision to hire Lawrence was unanimous by Vinton’s Town Council. His yearly salary will be $85,000.
“The Town of Blacksburg holds a special place in my heart. It’s been a wonderful Town to live and work,” said Lawrence. “Since coming here in 1994 to attend Virginia Tech, there have been many great memories and friendships. I’m excited about this new chapter in my life and looking forward to serving as Vinton Town Manager. I know my experiences in Blacksburg will serve me well in my new community.” While in Blacksburg, Lawrence has assisted in strategic planning efforts, downtown revitalization projects, parks and recreation master planning and reviewed major commercial and residential projects. “I am very excited to have Mr. Lawrence become part of our team here in Vinton. Chris is a very skilled person with a great education and the background required to do a great job as the new Vinton Town Manager,” said Mayor Brad Grose regarding Mr. Lawrence’s appointment. “I believe he will fit very well into our town structure and I’m sure our staff and citizens will enjoy working with him. I know I can speak for the entire Vinton Town Council when I say we are looking forward to working with Chris in promoting progress in Vinton. ” Lawrence, who has 10 years experience in local government, received both his Bachelors in Public and Urban Affairs and a Masters in Public Administration from Virginia Tech. “I know that Chris will be successful in serving the Town of Vinton as their new Town Manager,” said Blacksburg Town Manager Marc Verniel in a press release. “He has the right mix of experience and personal character to be successful in such a position. I am confident that he will work well with the Town Council and citizens of Vinton to help them achieve their goals. While we will miss him in Blacksburg, I am very proud of his professional accomplishments and wish him well.”
