The Mount Tabor Ruritan Club in Blacksburg is offering a grant of up to $5000. The money will be given to a local nonprofit to be used to address a Blacksburg community need. “This is the first year Mt. Tabor Ruritan is offering the $5000 grant,” said Mt. Tabor Ruritan Board Member Jim Moore. Each year Mt. Tabor Ruritan holds five fish fries and sells over 1000 quarts of apple butter. These fundraising efforts have culminated the $5000 amount that the club has made into a grant. “All the labor [for these projects] was from club volunteers,” Moore said. Though Ruritan is a nation-wide service-oriented organization, this grant was solely the idea of our very own Mt. Tabor sector. Club members wish the Blacksburg community to benefit from their fortunate support. The grant is earmarked for a special, usually one-time, purpose that meets the following criteria: responds to an important community need, has an impact on the community and provides some visibility to the club. “The club has had these two money-making projects over 20 years,” Moore said. “No other Ruritan clubs in the area have money-making enterprises such as this.” Applications can be obtained at mttaborruritan.org and are due by Oct. 15. Applicants must be a nonprofit organization, church or unit of government with a physical location in Montgomery County and that serves residents of the Blacksburg-Montgomery County area. The recipient of the award is expected to be announced at the Mt. Tabor Ruritan's club meeting on Dec. 4.
