On a cool, rainy Tuesday evening, the hot topic at the Blacksburg Town Council meeting centered around the new North Main Improvement Project, as several residents voiced their concerns.
A total of eight citizens spoke before to council about the proposed North Main Improvement Project, which will affect the businesses on North Main Street, as well as to some feeder streets. The majority of the concerns centered on turn lanes, traffic islands and a roundabout. Those speaking were concerned that these changes would make getting into those businesses along North Main more difficult, as some locations would not allow direct turns into businesses parking lots. Other concerns dealt with increased traffic problems as the roads would be narrowed to accommodate these traffic islands; parking in front of business on the lower end of North Main Street would be restricted or completely eliminated. Others voiced their opinions concerning pedestrian safety and everyone that spoke also felt that these changes would harm these merchants and may even force some merchants to go out of business. According to Mayor Ron Rordam, the North Main Improvement Project will be discussed again at the Town Council work session, which will be held next Tuesday, Sept. 2, at the Blacksburg Police Department Training Room at 11 a.m. Citizens are encouraged to attend. In other action last night, town council approved the following resolutions: The development of a Regional Water Supply Plan; Authorizing named town officials to execute the acceptance of Conveyance of Real Property; and Authorizing the creation of an additional pay plan position in the town manager’s office. Council also authorized the Town Manager to sign a contract with Anderson and Associates, Inc., for design development and construction documents for Market Square Park and Farmers’ Market. In addition, a parade permit was also approved for the Summer Sizzle 5K race on Sept. 7.
