In 2008, students in Montgomery County Public Schools continued to exceed the state and national mean score on the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT).

The school division has implemented various initiatives over the last few years to help students prepare for college in their high school course work. The school division began offering the PSAT to tenth grade students to ensure that all students are prepared early for the SAT.

Students also have the opportunity to attend the Southwest Virginia Governor’s School, which allows them to take advanced college level courses. An increase in the number of dual enrollment classes, virtual school offerings, distance learning courses, and expanded Advanced Placement (AP) course offerings have prepared students for the SAT.

“We are so proud of our students, staff, and parents for this accomplishment,” stated Dr. Tiffany Anderson, Superintendent. Dr. Anderson shared that the district’s goal is to ensure every student is prepared to enter the career or college of their choice when they graduate from Montgomery County Public Schools.

MCPS SAT scores
written by MCPS fan, August 27, 2008
It's wonderful that MCPS SAT scores have risen. As mentioned in the article, the system, students, and support at home are integral. Most all students are going to need to enhance their education, post high-school. One-year and other certification programs, from computer related training, to auto-mechanics is the need of the future. Reliable studies show that 80% of H.S. graduates, over the next 15 years (the study is about 2 years old) will NOT require a 4-year degree. However, certifcation within a trade of some sort is essential. The computer-related jobs 'roll-over' into auto mechanics, in that mechanics need to input and access data. Let's keep up the great scores! Let's support the integration of real-life scenarios for an economy that will require skilled, certified workers. I believe MCPS is on-track with with the concept. I would like to see some better facilities and tools for the trades and computer related offerings. Parity across the county. I know that MCPS is trying to address parity issues, and I wish the best to all!
