The Code of Virginia states that a student must declare a legal residence in order to register. A legal residence can be either a student’s permanent address from home or their current college residence. By making Montgomery County your permanent residence, you have declared your independence from your parents and can no longer be claimed as a dependent on their income tax filings – check with your tax professional.
If you have a scholarship attached to your former residence, you could lose this funding. And, if you change your registration to Montgomery County, Virginia Code requires you to change your driver’s license and car registration to your present address within 30 days. Individuals declaring their residence in another state cannot register to vote in Virginia. Students need to contact the voter registrar in the county, town or city of their home state for information on how to register and vote. If residence is declared in Virginia, students must obtain a voter registration application from their local voter registration office, the Department of Motor Vehicles or online at www.sbe.virginia.gov. Applications must be completed and returned to the agency where they were received or mailed to the local voter registration office. Once registered, students will receive a voter registration card by return mail to the address listed on the application. Students who are registered to vote elsewhere in Virginia or outside the State are entitled to vote by absentee ballot if they cannot return home to vote. Absentee ballot applications can be obtained from the student’s local voter registration office. Their absentee ballot will be sent to them and they must return it by Election Day. Students attending local schools (Virginia Tech) and registered in Montgomery County must vote at the designated precinct on their voter card. If you have any questions regarding this, please do not hesitate to contact the local Voter Registration Office.
