Heritage Day Tomorrow, Followed by Cruisin' Christiansburg Print E-mail
Leigh Anne Correll
The long-awaited annual Montgomery County Heritage Day will take place tomorrow from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Montgomery County Museum & Lewis Miller Regional Art Center, followed by the Cruisin' Christiansburg event in downtown Christiansburg.

There is much to do this Saturday in Christiansburg, beginning with the Montgomery Museum and its annual Heritage Day celebration.

“[The Heritage Day celebration] has grown over the years and is a wonderful exhibition of county artisans as well as entertainers and really opens the museum and grounds up to the public,” said Donna Capozi Speaks, executive director of the Montgomery Museum & Lewis Miller Regional Arts Center. “In our gallery, we currently have an exhibit of the work of the late Barbara Capps who was a dedicated proponent of the arts in our area and we have had innumerable visitors who were students of hers and have gone on to become artists in their own right, as was Barbara's wish.”

Along with the Capps exhibit inside the museum, visitors can check out the rotating history display. Currently, it is featuring an agricultural exhibit, but it will be switching to 'Foodways' near the end of the year. The 'Foodways' exhibit will demonstrate just how people in the county have managed life through good and bad times.

After the Capps art exhibit comes to a close, a new one will replace it.

“Our next art exhibit, with a reception on Sept. 5 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., will feature the miniatures lovingly created by the late Jim and Helen Dorsett, who also restored the Cambria Depot building.”

Outside the museum there will be an abundance of activities and interesting exhibits for all ages, to include the following:

Smithfield Junior Guild
Basketweaving
Model A Club
Antique Maxwell Car & Antique Steamer Car
Old Washing Machine
Corn Sheller
Mill Mountain Zoo
Tatting
United Daughters of the Confederacy
Riner Museum
Master Gardners
Beekeeping
Girl Scouts
Doll Collection
Knitting
Carving
Reenactors
Old Tool Management
Period Dancers
Kid's Games
Horse & Buggy
Antique Fire Engine

Life entertainment will also be featured. The schedule for that is as follows:

10 a.m. - St. Pauls Brass
10:40 a.m. - Steve Huppert
11:20 a.m. - Abbi Lester
12 p.m. - Kimberly Weitcamp
12:40 p.m. - Kathy Hollinsworth
1:20 p.m. - Due South Band

The museum is located at 300 S. Pepper Street in Christiansburg. For questions, please call (540) 382-5644. Visit the museum's website, www.montgomerymuseum.org, to find out more about the facility and see the upcoming events held there.

When festivities come to an end at the Montgomery Museum, a scavenger hunt will transition the fun to the downtown Christiansburg area for Cruisin' Christiansburg. West Main Street in Christiansburg will be blocked off from Franklin St. to Dunkley St. If turn-out requires, the street will also be blocked at the Franklin St. intersection, on up to Town Hall.

Live entertainment will also grace the stage from 4 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Cruisin' event, with music from the 'Triple B Trio' and the 'Encore Party Band.' Food vendors and non-profit organizations well line the streets for your enjoyment.

Come spend your Saturday in Christiansburg!
