CHS Cross Country Team To Hold Annual Across The County Relay Saturday Print E-mail
David Grimes
The Christiansburg High School (CHS) Cross Country team will be sponsoring its 2nd annual Across the County Relay Run this Saturday in an effort to raise money for its program.

“We had a lot of fun last year with this and we decided to try it again,” said CHS cross country coach Shane Guynn. “A lot of other running programs across the U.S. do this as a fundraiser, so we decided to give it a try.”

The 30-mile run starts at 8 a.m. at Pandapas Pond and will conclude around 12:45 p.m. at the Montgomery/Roanoke County line.

A total of 38 runners from the Blue Demon cross country team, along with their three coaches, will be running in groups of about five runners in two mile inclement.

According to the coach, the most exciting part is when the entire team meets at the 28-mile mark which is at the Chevron Station on Route 460 just past Eastern Montgomery High School and runs the final two miles as a complete team.

“Our kids are really excited and pumped,’ added Guynn.

Last year’s run earned the team between $2500 and $3000 in funds and they are hoping to raise the same amount on Saturday.

“The money goes to our cross country team,” said Guynn. “This year we plan to use the money to buy new uniforms and to help finance our varsity team trip to compete in Orlando.”

Guynn urged motorists to be on the lookout for the runners and to use caution when around them.

“We will have a police escort and parents on bicycles will be riding with the runners to help protect them,” noted Guynn.

The coach also urged the passing motorists to honk their horns or even stop at various locations and show your support for the runners.

Across the County Route:

START: Pandapas Pond on Route 460

- Runners will take a right onto 460 WEST towards Blacksburg
- At top of mountain, they will take a right onto Brush Mountain Road. This will bring the runners back 460 West.
- Runners will then take a right onto 460 West and run until they come to the first Blacksburg Exit (South Main Street)
- Runners will take a left onto North Main Street and run through Blacksburg on Main Street.
- When the runners reach the end of South Main in Blacksburg, they will continue straight and run into C’burg on North Franklin Street.
- They will run past Montgomery Regional Hospital, FNB (StellarOne), NRV Mall, Wal-Mart, etc.
- When they reach the center of Christiansburg (the Courthouse), they will take a left onto Main Street and then a right onto Roanoke Road.
- Once on Roanoke Road, the runners will continue straight through Christiansburg until they reach the Christiansburg Wayside (just past The Huckleberry).
- Once they reach Christiansburg Wayside, runners will take a right onto Christiansburg Wayside and run down the mountain until the runners come out on Route 11.
- Runners will then take a right onto Route 11 and follow until the Salem City Line
