My Opinion on Important Stuff Print E-mail
Leigh Anne Correll
So ... I thought I'd coined a term. After a quick Google search, I found I wasn't quite so lucky ... or, was  I?

Just Say No

Before we start, here's a quick disclaimer: For all offense-related purposes, this column is solely my opinion and not necessarily the opinion of any other EverythingNRV staff member, owner, contributor or otherwise. That means it's mine – all mine. Unless, of course, you'd like to share it. If that's the case, I've done my good deed for the day!

We've all heard the 'Just Say No' slogan of the D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) program. Given, I do agree ... I've had to slightly revise the words and meaning to fit my current political stance: “Just Say Nobama.”

Yep, that was my ever-so-cleverly invented term. That is, until I found out there are T-shirt's, bumper stickers and coffee mugs splattered with those very words. Let's face it, once it's on a bumper sticker, there's no claiming rights.

Amidst my disappointment of not having initiated the catchy slogan, I realized it wasn't so bad after all. It means there is hope; despite what the conventional media says, there ARE people who don't believe Barack Hussein Obama is the messiah.

Maybe it's just a sign of the times; maybe history is repeating itself in a non-formulaic way ... but doesn't anyone else feel it?

Super What?!

I am a talk radio junkie - I admit it. I've attended the meetings, I've stated my name in front of the masses and I've relished and reveled in the proverbial 'fall off the wagon' each and every time I get into my car and turn on my radio.

I can't help it. I love everything about talk radio. MY talk radio. The talk radio that airs on WWBU SuperTalk 101.7fm day-in and day-out. The talk radio that hosts such (beautiful) names as Glenn Beck, Dave Ramsey, Michael Savage and Rusty Humphries. The talk radio that quenches my political, financial, gossip and entertainment needs all at the same time.

Or ... it used to.

My beloved SuperTalk changed formats – with no warning, I might add! - and is now SuperSports. All sports, all the time.

I've been having ... well ... issues coming to terms with the change. No longer can I turn my radio on in the mornings and be graced with the good day wishes of the Doug Stephan Good Day Show; never again will I be able to swoon at Savage's heavy New York accent (did I type that out loud?); I will not get to enjoy the fact that some facts are facts and other facts are made up on the Darla Shine Happy Housewives Club and I will not get to laugh at the Foundation of Human Understanding hosted by the ever-entertaining Roy Masters.

In the effort of hope, I researched a bit and found the number to the Cumulus Media station who broadcasts 101.7fm in Radford. I called and asked what happened to MY station. The lady on the other end of the line sounded just as downtrodden as I felt when she said that they were 'trying' a new sports format. I took down their address (7080 Lee Highway, Radford) so I could send a letter to hopefully get the station re-formatted to its former SuperTalk self.

If anyone would like to help the process, please call Cumulus Media at (540) 731-6000. If anyone would like to sign a petition, let me know and I'll get the ball rolling!

Birth Control = Abortion?

I recently read a piece in the LA Times and a piece in Medical News Today that say the Bush administration is trying to equate birth control with abortion in the legal arena.

In essence, a law is in question that would allow health care providers and insurance companies to deny patients and customers access to specific kinds of birth control. They will be able to cite religious and personal reasons for doing so. The bill even goes as far as saying grants will be cut from those institutions who refuse to comply.

As it currently stands, health care providers have the option of providing abortion services or not; should we place birth control pills, intra-uterine devices (IUDs) and the 'morning-after' pill on the same kind of ability-to-deny list as abortions?

Imagine: A woman is sexually assaulted and is not allowed access to the 'morning-after' pill because her pharmacist doesn't believe in it.

Does that mean that when I go to Wal-Mart and buy a pack of hamburgers that my Muslim cashier can deny the sale because the meat is not Halal certified?

Barack Obama is one of many opposed to this bill. Ironically, he voted in opposition to legislation (the Born-Alive Infants Protection Act) that would define babies who survive late-term abortions and are outside the womb as human beings. The legislation would state that the surviving fetus would in fact be protected under the law and could receive medical care in efforts to save their life. Obama disagreed not once, not twice, but three times.

Wasn't it Clinton that got the housing crisis started by making sure all these current failing loans went through in the beginning of the housing boom? Just curious.

Albert, referencing talk radio as just talk is the same as saying all Obama has done is talk! He has no track record of any worthwhile endeavor that I'm aware of, but he's going to CHANGE everything? Well, I for one HOPE he doesn't get the opportunity.

Important Stuff; Albert

'A' persons 'nothing gets done with talk': Let's disband the Congress, Senate, the United Nations? I guess a boy named Sue may have problems. Narrow-mindedness of 'A' folks leads to centralized control; socialism and it's highest form, communism. I'm sure the latest ads from the 'others side' about a certain politician, 6 years-old when certain people did terrible things, was supporting the terrorists, is not 'smear' tactics.

Frankly, I am very proud of Leigh Anne's editorial comments and will look forward for more to come. Her points were right on target as far as my thoughts are concerned.

I appreciate that you tried to make the comments you espoused your own. It would have aided your argument if you had not admitted to being a talk radio junkie. Nothing gets done with talk (especially the entertainment that is talk radio), or conservatism. Medicines do not get discovered, cures do not happen, and we'd still be walking or on horseback and reading by candlelight if someone hadn't decided to break with convention and try something different. Progress can't happen if you are dedicated to preserving the status quo.

I am particularly amused when I hear Sen. McCain say he is a fiscal conservative, like Governor Reagan and the Bush Family. Under the presidency of Mr. Reagan, the USA ballooned to a 200+ Billion dollar deficit. Under the first President Bush, the USA went to a 300 Billion dollar deficit. Then under the presidency of Governor Clinton, the USA went to a 200+ surplus. And in the last 7.5 years, the USA has dropped into deficit again, to the tune of 482 Billion dollars under the leadership of the current President Bush. Notice the deficits are all under so called 'fiscal conservatives', and the surplus came under the 'liberal'.

I am not an Obama maniac, nor do I believe he is the messiah - but the recent track record suggests my family would be better off with Sen. Obama as opposed to the fear and smear tactics of the other option. (Echoed by you when you refer to Mr. Obama's middle name, Hussein - like that ties him to anything other than himself. It would be like suggesting PCHS's Nubian Peak was incredibly smart because his parents named him after an African tribe with a rich history or intelligence, even though he is not related. Mr. Peak is smart because his parents insisted on education first).

Finally, above I referred to the former presidents by their title before they became president. That is the law in this country, there is only one President, currently George W. Bush.

As to Super Talk now being Super Sports, Scott Stevens (the station's program director and a regular on this site) has told me that was the decision of Terry Fulton, the sales manager for WWBU.

Important Stuff
written by A Citizen, August 16, 2008
Important Stuff: things you mentioned are important. I would 'cash-in' on the acronym that I've not heard, until your 'coin'! Regarding more serious notes, the protection of life is crucial to mankind, and I hope that all will embrace this issue more pro-actively. I concur that consistency must be met and kept, regarding medical and other considerations; it should be integral within the USA. Changing gears: it's fierce 'out there' in the marketing of media ad sales and radio/newspaper survival. After all, we are on the net, right NOW! I foresee a continuance of downsizing of certain broadcast and print media. There will be fortunes made by savvy business folks, via innovations in print and broadcast. Some 'newbies' are already doing well. Sorry about 'your' station! Concerted efforts that you propose may work!
