After interviewing three candidates - two from the New River Valley - for the top position, Radford University (RU) has named its new police chief.
Colleen Roberts, who is the deputy chief for the Christopher Newport University Police Department, will take over at RU on Aug. 31. Roberts will replace Chief Granville E. Hampton, who announced his retirement in April. Roberts is a graduate of the FBI National Academy for Law Enforcement Administrators, the Law Enforcement Leadership and Management Institute in Hampton Roads, and the Virginia State Police Academy. She earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Old Dominion University. “I am pleased to announce Colleen Roberts as the new RU police chief,” said Norleen Pomerantz, vice president for student affairs. “She has extensive experience working with university students and currently supervises 54 sworn and non-sworn employees of the CNUPD. Lieutenant Roberts will be an excellent addition to a police department dedicated to ensuring the safety of our campus community.” Included in the candidate pool was Lt. Joe Davis, of the Blacksburg Police Department. Davis has been with BPD since 1992 and has degrees from Radford and New River Community College. The other candidate was Lt. Deborah Morgan, who is with the Virginia Tech Police Department. Morgan is working on a degree in educational leadership at Va. Tech.
