Mack Trucks, Inc., along with Volvo Trucks North America, announced Thursday a major restructuring plan designed to further improve the company's competitiveness and position it for long-term industry leadership. Part of the new plan will cause the New River Valley Volvo plant in Dublin to lose its Mack Truck production line.
According to a news release from Mack, all Mack highway vehicles from the plant in Virginia's New River Valley (NRV) will be transferred to the plant in Macungie, PA, (where Mack's construction and refuse vehicles are currently assembled) to take advantage of efficiencies arising from consolidated assembly of the entire product line, and create a brand-unique environment for Mack customers. NRV will continue to produce all the vehicles in Volvo Trucks North America's range. Volvo officials said the transfer is planned for the fourth quarter of 2008. “We [NRV plant] found out about the loss of the production line at 10:01 a.m. this morning,” said Lester Hancock, President of UAW Local 2069. They told us at a meeting at 8:30 a.m. that a press release would be issued at 10 a.m. But they would not tell us what it concerned.” Hancock added that between 100 and 200 people would be affected by the loss of the Mack production line. “It’s very possible that we may lose 100 or less employees when the recalls start in late October or early November because of this.” Hancock did have some good news to report. “We will have about 30 people recalled back in mid-September on our engine groove line.” Click here to read the news release from Mack Trucks.
