Both Radford City and Pulaski County school officials were pleased with the results of the annual Q99 'Pack the Bus' campaign, which made a stop Tuesday at the Fairlawn Wal-Mart to collect school supplies for underprivileged children.
The 'Pack the Bus' campaign, which is sponsored by Q99fm radio out of Roanoke, will make 14 stops in five days at various Wal-Marts across the New River Valley, Roanoke and other areas of the station’s listening audience. The campaign started Monday with a stop in Wytheville to benefit the Wythe and Bland County Schools. Tuesday’s stop supported the Radford City and Pulaski County school systems.
“Our citizens were more generous in their giving this year compared to others,” said Pat Harrison, director of transportation for Radford City schools. “We are very grateful to Wal-Mart, Pepsi, AT&T and SunTrust for their financial contributions.”
Harrison went on to say, “Everyone’s efforts will make a difference in a student life at Radford City Schools.”
Not only were Radford officials happy because they had exceeded last year’s donations, but Pulaski County officials were also excited about the items received for their school system.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for our underprivileged students,” said Annie Whitaker, a teacher at Pulaski County Middle School. “We had a great turnout and we thank the Pulaski County community for supporting our schools.”
The 'Pack the Bus' campaign will stop at the Christiansburg Wal-Mart on Thursday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. to collect school supplies for both Montgomery County and Floyd County Schools. On Friday, the bus stops at the Pearisburg Wal-Mart from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. to benefit the Giles County Public Schools.
