We've all seen the skeleton of the structure soon to become the Christiansburg Aquatic Center. Its progression has been watched by the entire Christiansburg community; its financial requirements scrutinized, questioned and foregone for now; and its revenue-creating ability laid on the table.

The Aquatic Center is scheduled to reach its stage of completion in December '08 – January '09. Plans for its existence were slated previously as part of the 10-year Recreation Master Plan for development, following the completion of the Harkrader Sports Complex.

Though staffing plans are not completed, the Aquatic Center will create jobs for local people. One such job has already been filled by a very qualified local entity.

“We have hired an Aquatic Director,” said Clay McCoy, director of Human Resources for the Town of Christiansburg. “[Her name is] Terry Caldwell, [she] is currently the Manager of Aquatic Programs for Montgomery County.”

Caldwell will be coming on board with the town in late August. According to McCoy, her main focus will be on providing services associated with leisure pool activities for citizens, heated aquatic therapy and hosting aquatic competitions and swim leagues utilizing the 50-meter competition pool.

Located just off North Franklin Street, the Aquatic Center will have a access points from several town roads.

“One advantage [to that location] is that much of the site was already owned by the Town, a portion of which served as the location of the Town's original wastewater treatment plant, and adjoining property purchased years ago for future recreational use,” McCoy said. “The location gives us an opportunity to spread recreational facilities throughout the Town to better serve all residents without having all facilities concentrated in one particular area, and ties in with the existing Depot Street Park. We anticipate the close proximity of the Aquatic Center to the Downtown to help draw tourism to the Downtown area in conjunction with our Downtown Revitalization efforts.”

Local civil engineering, landscaping architecture and surveying firm, Gay and Neel, Inc., (GNI), are working with the town of Christiansburg on the Aquatic Center project. According to their website, they are providing on-site planning, construction staking, and Erosion and Sediment Control plans.
