A 23-year-old Shawsville man died Wednesday afternoon while fishing in the New River near the Pulaski County/Radford city line.

According to Pulaski County Sheriff Jim Davis, Samuel Matthew Harless of Shawsville and a friend were wading the river while fishing under the train trestle, which is located off of Hazel Hollow Road on the Pulaski County side of the river.

It was reported that Harless went under the water and did not resurface. His body was located a short time later by rescue crews.

The Radford Police Department and Radford Emergency Services personnel assisted.
