With the temperatures forecasted to be in the 90s across the New River Valley and even in the low 100s in some areas, here are some tips to help protect you from the heat.
According to Lt. Sarah Walker of the Blacksburg Rescue Squad there are three different types of heat related illnesses. The first is heat cramps. “Heat cramps are the result of working in extreme heat for several hours, “ Walker said. The signs of heat cramps are abdominal and limb cramps. If these symptoms arise, go to a cool place and rehydrate with clear juices or sports drinks. The second heat related illness is heat exhaustion. “Heat exhaustion is caused by not replacing the fluids and minerals lost through sweat when spending larger amounts of time in extreme heat,” according to Walker. Some of the signs for heat exhaustion include nausea, vomiting, pale skin and the loss of consciousness. “Heat exhaustion is also treated by resting in a cool location and drinking fluids that are fortified with vitamins and minerals such as sports drinks,” added Walker. “However, if a person looses consciousness it is always wise to call 911.” The third and most dangerous heat illness is a heat stroke. “Untreated heat exhaustion can progress to heat stroke which is a medical emergency,” according to Walker. Symptoms of a heat stroke include flushed skin, absence of perspiration, confusion, hallucinations, rapid pulse, difficulty breathing, uncharacteristically odd behavior, or seizures. “If a person is suffering from a heat stroke you will want to immediately begin cooling the subject off with cool water and call 911,” noted Walker. Lt. Walker also mentioned the following things you can do to avoid heat related illnesses: - Do outdoor activities early in the morning or later in the evening when the temperature is lower; - Wear light colored, light weight clothing; - Wear a hat; - Maintain hydration. Carry a water bottle. If working or playing outside drink athletic beverages; - Take frequent breaks away from the heat. If you think you are in the heat and believe you are suffering from any of these symptoms, call your family physician or your local rescue squad immediately.
