Ask the Expert: Laser Advice with Mary Babcock Print E-mail
Leigh Anne Correll
Mary Babcock is the owner of The Laser Clinic of Blacksburg at 712 N. Main Street. Her services include permanent hair reduction, skin rejuvenation and elimination of leg and facial veins.

“Our most popular service is hair removal,” Babcock said. “Backs for men and bikini or facial hair for women.”

Babcock has been in business just over four years after discovering the self-described 'neat' laser profession. Her people skills have helped her develop her office into a thriving and successful endeavor.

According to Babcock, empathy and honesty are two job requirements in her career field. As she sees many individuals with embarrassing hair issues, she utilizes these two skills in order to inform them of exactly what can be done or refer them elsewhere if she believes they would receive additional help there.

The Laser Clinic services offer more than just an aesthetic appeal – they assist with the overall health and wellbeing of each client.

“Many people come in for the convenience, but there are many that have self-esteem issues because they feel ugly, etc.” Babcock said. “They may have facial hair or young girls with PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome) have hair everywhere or heavily in a few places. It is hard enough to be a teenager without feeling that everyone is staring at your arms or mustache. If you feel ugly, you may feel unlovable, so the issues go very deep. For men, it's the same. If they have very hair backs, some think that no one will want to go out with them. They can get very self-conscious, so being able to offer a solution is a really wonderful thing.”

Babcock is also able to treat the obvious physical signs of Rosacea, a skin disorder that causes persistent redness on the face.

The majority of Babcock's clients are middle-aged women, though she often sees an influx of younger women wanting hair removed from their bikini lines and legs.

“The men, once they make the first appointment, do not seem reluctant to visit,” Babcock said. “My office has only one laser going so there are no others running around. It is very private and they feel comfortable with it.”

So she is able to speak from experience, Babcock has personally had laser treatments done on herself.

“My sister also owns a laser clinic and whenever I go home for a visit, I have a treatment,” Babcock said.

One of the biggest questions concerning laser treatment is, 'What does it feel like?' According to Babcock, different areas of the body are affected in different ways. Inclusively, laser work does sting, but the intensity differs from person-to-person as well as from body part to body part.

“I do a spot test for every consultation, that is free,” Babcock said. “That way, for safety sake, I see how their skin reacts and if the settings chosen are correct. I also make sure there are no hidden issues. It gives the prospective client a chance to find out more about the laser, what to expect and mostly dispel the myths of extreme pain. Once a person has the test they are usually surprised and say, 'Is that all there is to it?' Once you can alleviate the fears, they feel more comfortable about everything and that makes it more enjoyable.”

In addition to improving the body through laser treatments, Babcock also advocates eating a healthy, locally-grown diet and getting exercise on a regular basis.

“I try to eat right and I get a ton of exercise,” Babcock said. “I have lately started contemplating starting a database for all veggies, meats, eggs, etc., that are produced locally. It is difficult to become an omnivore. Where do you find them? Our Farmer's Market is a good start, but there are a lot more out there. I think eating locally is a major factor in our overall health. So, I have been thinking about how to do it and have it be convenient for all. Everyone should be able to easily find the local growers and producers. That will be my next project!”
