Montgomery County dedicated its newest ball field since 1998 Wednesday morning and within an hour following the ceremony, more than 100 area youth put the facility to use by participating in a baseball clinic.

County officials, including Board of Supervisors Chairman Annette Perkins and County Administrator Clay Goodman, spoke during the ceremony, which also included a few comments from David Hagan of the Shelor Automotive Group.

The new facility, which is named the Motor Mile Sports Complex, includes a new baseball field and softball field, as well as being able to be used for football, soccer and lacrosse. The field is also the first in Montgomery County to be lighted.

“We still have some work to do on the field,” said Mitchell Haugh, Montgomery County Parks and Recreation Director. “We still have to install restrooms, bleachers and outfield fence, along with some other minor items.”

The newly lighted field is the first to be built in Montgomery County since 1998 when the Plum Creek Field was constructed.

interchange, all came about when Shelor’s bought the old property from the county at a reduced price. One of the sales stipulations was that Shelor in return for the discounted price, had to build a new complex and donate the field back to the county.

Following Wednesday’s morning dedication, which also saw Larry Shelor throw out the first pitch, more than 100 area youth baseball players took to field to participate in the Cal Ripkin Baseball Clinic.

“Following today’s events, we will start back to work on the field and it will be ready to see its first real action come next spring,” added Haugh.

Next summer, Montgomery County will play host to the Dixie AAA 9-10 year-olds and O-Zone District 11-12 year-olds tournaments now that the sports complex has lighting.
