With the start of school just around the corner, parents from across the New River Valley will want to take advantage of the state’s back-to-school tax holiday this weekend, in which consumers can purchase back to school items, including clothing, without paying the state sales tax.
“We waited till the tax-free weekend last year to buy our kids school supplies and clothing needs and we saved around $250,” said Angela Whitten of Christiansburg. “With four kids, we will do the same thing this weekend. Every little bit we can save helps us with other things.” Not only do the consumers like the tax break, but also retailers enjoy the weekend as sales increase. “This is one of our biggest weekends as far as school-related sales go, “ said Melissa Walls, a manager at the Christiansburg Wal-Mart. “We are very busy.” This year will mark the third year in which Virginia has offered the back-to-school tax holiday and according to the Virginia Department of Taxation, taxpayers are expected to save $4 million this year, compared to last year’s savings of $3.8 million.
