The Christiansburg Rescue Squad recently opened the Riner station as a substation of their squad. Opening a new station requires many changes and those changes require personnel. Having an adequate number of volunteers to run the Riner station is their greatest need at present. Montgomery County provided funding for the facility and County owned equipment has been transferred to the station. A few members from the Christiansburg station have step up to the call to serve in Riner. While getting new personnel on board the squad is working with minimal numbers of trained members to get the call nights covered. The squad needs your help. To become a volunteer there are a few things you need; a good riving record (a limited number of points against your record and no DUI's), the desire and time to help others, and training. To answer the training needs the squad is hosting an EMT Basic class in the Riner area beginning July 27, 2008 at the Riner fire house at 1 p.m. The class will be taught by Debbie Akers a Paramedic with the Christiansburg squad. Classes will be held Sunday evenings from 1 p.m. - 7 p.m. and Thursday from 6:30 p.m. - 10 p.m.. During the class participants will learn many life saving skills. Individuals will discover methods of treating and caring for sick and injured patients, loading and transporting patients. This class opens the door to a future in the squad and in the emergency medical field. Participants will be required to take a state final exam at the conclusion of the program and will be well prepared for that exam by the instructor. You might say it is too far to drive to Riner for a class. Watch the Montgomery County website as well as www.everythingnrv.com for future announcements of classes in your area. The other squads in the County; Blacksburg, Christiansburg, Long-Shop McCoy, and Shawsville are always looking for members.
