Walking to Overcome, Honor and Remember |

Last night at 7 p.m., the Floyd County Relay for Life began. Community members gathered at the Floyd County High School to walk laps and raise money for the American Cancer Society.
Cancer has touched many lives. It is for that reason that the Relay for Life exists. According to RelayForLife.org, a relay brings people together to: • Celebrate the lives of those who have battled cancer. The strength of survivors inspires others to continue to fight.
• Remember loved ones lost to the disease. At Relay, people who have walked alongside people battling cancer can grieve and find healing.
• Fight Back. We Relay because we have been touched by cancer and desperately want to put an end to the disease.
The sidewalk at Floyd County High School was lined with luminaries – small, white bags with candles inside and a name or message written on the outside. For a five dollar donation, visitors purchased the bags and placed them on display. As the sun set, the luminaries were lit and a vigil was held.Teams of individuals have been fundraising for several months to donate. They sported banners that told which organization they represented. Some held sponsorships, others relied on personal donations, but all were in support of the same cause. A friendly competition spurred the teams to raise as much money as possible. Vendors set up shop around the track and settled in for a night full of fun, entertainment and fellowship. There was food, jewelry, socializing tents and fun activities for all ages. Purple shirts with the word 'Survivor' in white letters were worn by those who have overcame the odds and conquered the disease called cancer. Photos by Leigh Anne Correll
