The Bonnie Kitts Memorial Golf Tournament was held at The Meadows Golf and Country Club, on Wednesday. The annual tournament honors Bonnie Kitts; a victim of a drunk-driver. Her husband, Gary, and son, Brian, teamed to aim at winning the tournament, after winning several times.
The purpose of the tournament is to raise funds for MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Drivers) and other groups; Brian often speaks to groups about the perils of drunk driving. The blue-skied Summer day and lush greens afforded 20 four-person teams a perfect day for friendly competition for coveted trophies. A silent auction and sponsorships from several area businesses and VA Tech bolstered the funding for pro-active groups that the Kitts help support. The day's special incentive was a hole-in-one award: a new car, but it remained ownerless at the end of the day. Volunteers from the community and Meadows Club staffers helped with coordination of the day. "It's always fun, getting to see so many friends and acquaintances. I hope we play as well as we can. Brian always plays well," said Gary Kitts. Brian is following his Mother's career-track of serving the public in secondary education; she was a teacher. Brian is a Principal in Montgomery County Public Schools.Photos by Larry Middleton
