Christiansburg Planning Commission Discusses 5 Issues Print E-mail
Larry Middleton
The Town of Christiansburg Planning Commission met on Monday to discuss five issues on their slate. Chairman Jim Vanhoozier called the meeting to order; then discussions proceeded within the commission and audience members.

Brian Young's request for a conditional use permit for expansion of his landscaping business on Howery St. was asked to be heard on Tuesday's public hearing meeting. The Town had received two letters about the expansion; one supporting it, and one opposing it.

The Lancaster family asked to expand their garage related operations, on 940 Radford Rd., via a special use permit. The public hearing will be on July 15; no comments  against the proposal were made, and no letters received.

"[It was] only an expansion," Darline Lancaster said. "It will meet all necessary requirements of the town."

VB Holdings asked for a six-month extension of their conditional use permit for their salvage and building supplies operations on Scattergood Drive.  A six-month extension was given, on the condition that a plan for the site be submitted within 90 days.

A sign ordinance was discussed, the Planning Commission is supporting a re-wording of the Town's rules regarding  'secondary' roofs of structures, which might vary from 15' to 20'.  Total square footage, and height were discussed.  Further discussion was suggested.

Historical Districts were last on the agenda, as the considerations continue from months before.  Chairman Vanhoozier suggested that contacts that live or operate a business in the three areas help in gathering data from more residents.  Tacey Newell-Foutz commented that after attending two workshops in May, an inventory of buildings that qualify is essential; that what to do and when to meet needs to be decided.  The discussion lingered, with one Board member suggesting that architects specializing in historical structures and areas being hired.

The meeting was adjourned, as former Town Council members and others in the audience spoke with one another.
