Hager-Smith, along with Derek Myers, both took their seats on town council after being elected in May. They replaced Paul Lancaster and Mary Holliman.

Council also approved the following: A Resolution Setting The Regular Meeting Dates For Blacksburg Town Council; A Resolution Authorizing Promotional Rates At The Blacksburg Municipal Golf Course; A Resolution Approving Various Aspects Of The Steppin' Out 2008 Festival; A Resolution Referring To The Planning Commission An Ordinance To Amend The Town Code Regarding The Application Process For Conditional Zoning In The RR-2 Zoning District; A Resolution Requesting Conveyance Of College Avenue Right-Of-Way From Virginia Tech; and a Resolution Approving The Use Of Portions Of College Avenue And Otey Street For Gobblerfest, which is scheduled for Sept. 5.

Council also scheduled the first reading and schedule public hearing for August 12 on the following ordinances: Ordinance #1496 - An Ordinance Authorizing The Lease Of The Thomas-Conner Property At 104 Draper Road To Virginia Polytechnic Institute And State University; Ordinance #1497 - An Ordinance To Amend The Town Code By Adding A New Section Ordinance Requiring Safety Equipment For Moped Operators And Passengers; #1498 - An Ordinance Vacating Plat Of Resubdivision Of Lot 9, Blackwood Addition; An Ordinance To Amend Town Code Section 5-200, Pertaining To The Town's Dog Leash Requirement, To Permit The Use Of Electronic Leash Or Training Devices And Establish A Civil Penalty For Violation; Special Use Permit - 717 and 719 Puller Lane.  Request for Automobile Repair Services use in General Commercial (GC) District.

Four citizens also addressed town council during Citizens Comments. Tom Roberts asked that council look into the zoning restrictions concerning handicap ramps and to re-visit the mix-use zoning ordinance.

One resident voiced his concerns about the stormwater runoff in the Woodbine Subdivision, while another citizen had concerns about the Harding Road Project.

Council also re-appointed John W. Kirby and C.W. Smith to the Blacksburg-Christiansburg-VPI Water Authority. In addition, council members were also appointed to various Boards, Commissions, Committees and task forces.

Mayor Ron Rordam also thanked everyone for their part in making the Fourth of July events in Blacksburg successful.
