A Pulaski County man, along with a Radford resident, were just two of 59 new Virginia State Troopers to graduate from the 114th Trooper Basic Session this past Thursday in Richmond.

Dennis L. Mitchell of Pulaski County and Rodney L. Kenley of Radford will begin their final phase of training on Monday, when the new troopers report to their respective duty assignments. Each trooper will spend a minimum of six weeks with a field-training officer learning his new patrol area.

Mitchell, 25, who will be assigned to Caroline County, served in the U.S. Army Reserves from 2000 to 2008 and Mosul, Iraq from 2004 to 2005.

Kenley, 40, who will be assigned Southampton County, joined the Virginia State Police because, “I wanted to receive the best training I could get.”

The 114th Basic Session started its demanding 35-week training session back on Oct. 25, 2007. Since then, the new troopers have received more than 1,300 hours of instruction in more than 100 different subjects, including crime scene investigation, survival Spanish, judicial procedures, defensive tactics, cultural diversity, and firearms.
