Naming the new principal at Radford High School, along with the appointment of the new chairman and vice-chair were just a few of the highlights at Thursday night’s meeting of the Radford High School.
Gregory M. Payne, 29, of Floyd was named the new principal at Radford High School. Payne will replace Dr. Mark Lineburg, who resigned to accept a position with the Amherst County Public Schools as Assistant Superintendent for Operations. Payne comes to Radford after serving the last three years as assistant principal at Floyd County High School. Payne, who has been with the Floyd County School system for the past seven years, is originally from Tazewell County. He graduated with a Masters Degree from Radford University, as well as receiving a BS from Bluefield College. Payne’s wife, Donna, is the assistant principal at Dublin Elementary School, and they have two children, Emily (5) and Isaac (3). “I’m excited to be on board,” said Payne. “The reputation of Radford Schools for their excellence is what drew me to apply.” Payne was selected following an extensive interviewing process in which 13 people applied for the principal’s position. Three people then received second interviews with Dr. Chuck Bishop, Radford School Superintendent. After the final three interviews, Bishop made his decision and made the recommendation to the school board last night. One of Payne’s first assignment as the new principal at RHS will be involved with selection of a new assistant principal at Radford to replace Rex Gearheart, who resigned to become the new principal at Narrows High School. According to Dr. Bishop, 17 candidates have applied for the assistant principal position. I’m excited in forging a new team with the assistant principal,” added Payne. Payne said the new assistant would be in place by the time class’s resume in August. In other action last night, Alvin R. Alexander was named the new school board chairman for the 2008-09 year and G. Lynn Burris was selected vice-chair. Kerri Bishop will remain as the school board clerk and Dr. Bishop will be deputy clerk. Last night’s meeting was also the first for Dr. William Flora. Flora, who was recently elected to the school board, replaces Diana Dobbins. The school board will continue to meet on the second and fourth Tuesday’s of each month. Following a closed meeting, it was announced that the school board accepted the resignation of Lineburg, as well as, the resignation of Deb Reedy, the varsity girls’ basketball coach at RHS.
