Blacksburg Planning Commission Schedules Public Hearing For Drive-Thru Restaurant Print E-mail

The Blacksburg Planning Commission scheduled an August public hearing for a Special Use Permit request for a drive-thru restaurant with one external speaker on South Main Street at its meeting Tuesday night.

Arby’s, which is under contract with Fairmont Properties, owners of the controversial First & Main Project is requesting a SUP to build a drive in (drive-thru) restaurant with one external speaker at 1450 South Main Street.

The public hearing will be held on August 5, 2008.

During two scheduled Public Hearings at last night’s meeting, the Planning Commission approved a SUP request for a Automobile Repair Services at 717 & 719 Puller Lane; the Commission also approved the Jefferson Place Major Subdivision. This request called for six (6) lots at 701 Lee Street.

Also several people spoke out during Citizen’s Comments. Two of those speaking voiced their concerns about the proposed Harding Road Project. Also, another citizen spoke out about the town requiring people to get a permit, pay $300 and go through the long process, just to build a handicap ramp on their property.

There were also updates on the Environmental Quality and Land Use; Historic or Design Review Board; Long Range Planning Committee; Montgomery County Planning Commission and the New River Planning District.

Lat night’s meeting marked the first meeting for former council members Mary Holiman and Paul Lancaster, who were both appointed to the Blacksburg Planning Commission after losing their seat on town council.

Upcoming Planning Commission meetings include: Long Range Planning Committee at noon on Thursday, July 10 and the Planning Commission Work Session at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, July 15.
