Ten students from Blacksburg High School recently competed in the National Forensic League tournament in Las Vega, Nevada. The students qualified for the national tournament by placing in district and regional competitions. BHS had more competitors at the tournament than any school in Virginia.
Carl David Goette-Luciak made it to the semi-final round in international extemporaneous speaking. This put him among the top 15 competitors out of more than 200 who began in the event. Shevish Puri made it to the octo-final round in the same category placing him among the top 60 competitors in the event. Sam Hopkins made it to the quarter-final round in humorous interpretation placing him among the top 30 of the more than 300 students who began the event. The National Forensic League is the nation's oldest and largest debate and speech honor society. The league promotes secondary school speech and debate activities and interscholastic competition to develop student skills and increase public awareness about the value of speech, debate and communication.
